The BNP Chairperson and national leader, Begum Khaleda Zia, is no longer with us. We are deeply saddened.

She passed away today, Tuesday, at 6:00 a.m., while under treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). She was 80 years old.

Khaleda Zia was a living history of Bangladesh’s political transformation. With her passing, the country today has lost its beloved leader and is left speechless. The conclusion of a long, struggle-filled, and eventful political chapter has occurred, one that will remain unforgettable in the democratic history of Bangladesh.

Her emergence in post-independence Bangladeshi politics marked a historic turning point. Through times of hardship, political instability, and struggles against authoritarianism, she established herself as a resolute and uncompromising leader. In the 1980s and 1990s, her leadership in the movement to restore democracy gave new direction to the nation’s politics. She was a key voice in reestablishing the people’s voting rights and constitutional governance.

In 1991, by assuming office as Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia not only became a trailblazer for women in leadership but also became an integral part of the history of parliamentary democracy in the country. Whether in power or in opposition, she remained an active center of political activity.
